After six impactful years at the University of Redlands, Ken Grcich, the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, left to fulfill a new position at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q). Known for his deep connection with students and his pivotal role in student development, Grcich is leaving behind a lasting legacy that has profoundly shaped the Redlands community.
In his departure, Grcich reflected on his time at Redlands with fondness.
“I have had the distinct honor of serving students and collaborating with incredible colleagues,” he said.
Grcich recalled the passion and enthusiasm of students he encountered during his interview for the position, which set the tone for a rewarding journey over the years.
“My journey started in July 2018 needing shelter but I was provided a community of colleagues that I will always cherish,” he said.
Throughout his tenure, Grcich played a significant role in initiatives aimed at student success, including overseeing the Community Standards process and co-leading the institutional response to COVID-19, particularly when it came to student life. Reflecting on his experience during the pandemic, Grcich acknowledged how it shaped his commitment to student advocacy.
“I worked tirelessly to push for the reopening of our residential halls, even under strict guidelines, because I knew it would help our students thrive in challenging circumstances,” he said.
During this time, Grcich found strength in the relationships he formed with colleagues and students.
“I will always remember walking around my pool in my dress shirt and pajama pants while talking to Erin for hours during COVID,” he said.
Ken Grcich was also a steadfast supporter of the international student community at Redlands. Always approachable and ready to lend a hand, he became a pillar of guidance and reassurance for students navigating life far from home.
His impact extended beyond administrative duties, creating a sense of belonging and trust that resonated with students from around the world.
In addition to his administrative duties, Grcich fostered community spirit through memorable moments like hosting pool parties for student leaders at his home. He supported the university’s Outdoor Programs Trip Leaders, Resident Assistants, and the DAWGS group. These gatherings, along with events like the Connections Retreat, were moments that exemplified Redlands’ camaraderie.
Grcich recalled, “Spending a powerful weekend on a Connections retreat with Jillian” as one of many highlights.
Though leaving was not an easy decision, Grcich was approached by GU-Q through LinkedIn and found the opportunity aligned with his background from his time in Abu Dhabi. He will continue to work closely with students in a culturally enriching academic environment while pursuing his passion for education at GU-Q.
As Grcich transitions to his new role, he leaves behind a heartfelt message for students and staff: “Thank you for giving my life purpose. It was an honor to work alongside you.”
His parting words also included cherished memories: “Watching Jeff Martinez introduce my 11-year-old son to American football… singing musicals at the top of our lungs with Leah… and eating Mahi Mahi for a month after a deep-sea fishing trip with Matt Gragg.” These anecdotes illustrate the deep bonds he formed during his time at Redlands.
Grcich also presented the Student Affairs office with a handcrafted glass orange, symbolizing the vitality and warmth of the relationships he’s built at Redlands.
His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the University of Redlands, but his contributions will continue to be felt by the students and staff who were fortunate to work with him.
