University to Host Support Gathering on Israel-Gaza War on Thursday

In light of the recent attacks in Gaza, the university community is invited to an open support session at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday on the first floor of Hunsaker Center.

“The loss of life and profound suffering of countless individuals is deeply saddening, and our thoughts and hearts are with everyone affected,” University President Krista Newkirk wrote in a university-wide email announcing the gathering. “In the days ahead, let’s hold each other close and draw strength from our University community.”

Students are also encouraged to utilize the free counseling service Timely Care for additional support.

On Saturday, the Palestinian militant group Hamas ambushed civilian towns in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 1000 people and 14 American citizens, according to the New York Times. In retaliation, the Israeli government launched a series of airstrikes to re-capture Gaza, declaring a state of war. The war represents the latest unfolding of the Israel-Palestinian conflict for sovereignty and control of territory in the region.
