The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department is hosting the annual Social Justice Conference. It will take place on March 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Orton Center. The event will feature panels from students and a keynote speaker during lunch, according to student Lexi Riffel on the planning committee.
This year’s keynote speaker is Abraham Weil, PhD, a Redlands alum, author, and professor at the University of Kansas in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department. According to his Weil’s on the University of Kansas website, he is the general editor of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly. During lunch, he will be speaking on the topic of “AstroTERFs: Reproductive Justice Beyond the Trans/TERF Dialectic.”
Rose Remember, a student on the planning committee, explains how the conference works. “People can come and go as their schedules allow, and it’s absolutely ok if people just want to pop in for the keynote or just to see a friend present!”
The student organization Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA) is hosting a Sexual Health and Consent Teach-In, which will be in Orton Center from 6:45 to 8 p.m. on March 20. The event will feature presentations about consent, sexual violence, and contraceptive education, according to their Instagram @uor.ppgenaction. The teach-in will also include Q&A sessions, guest speakers, and food will be provided. The event is eligible for Greek hours.
PPGA also asked students at the university to fill out a survey about sexual assault on campus. They plan to present the results at the teach-in to “see how many people on campus are affected by it and so we can see what else we can do to address this issue on campus,” according to PPGA member Alyssa Rodriguez. “We just want to make sure the culture on campus is safe, especially at parties.”
Both of these events aim to create a more inclusive and safe campus for all students.
