University to Host Town Hall on Woodbury Merger  

The university is holding a student town hall at tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Orton Center to discuss the acquisition of the historical liberal arts school Woodbury University – here’s everything you need to know.

On Nov. 30. of 2023, President Newkirk announced via email that the University of Redlands had entered talks to potentially integrate Woodbury University and its programs into the school.  On Jan. 12, a second email informed students that a formal agreement between the universities had been reached. Since then, a handful of events were planned to allow students to ask questions regarding the acquisition. One of those events, a student town hall, was recently announced.

The student town hall is scheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Orton Center. A virtual option on Zoom is available for those unable to attend in person. A link for the meeting can be found in the email sent on Friday, Jan. 19.  

The work to integrate Woodbury University’s programs into the University of Redlands has been swift, involving student surveys, a virtual open house on Jan. 13, and multiple emails. Updates to the university community began in November and are ongoing.

Woodbury University is a historical, nonprofit liberal arts university located in the Burbank area, situated on 22.4 acres, and has over 30 programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. . These programs include, but are not limited to, gaming art and design, architecture, fashion, and filmmaking. Per the University of Redlands’ FAQ page , once the merge is completed, the University of Redlands will be able to offer almost double the number of current programs. Woodbury University also has a gallery in Hollywood that shows experimental exhibitions and multidisciplinary collaborations. 

All students will have the opportunity to further their education via access to resources from both universities, with minimal change expected for already-existing curricula, according to the University of Redlands’ website.
