Concertmaster Luchi Jiang ‘27 joins guest soloist Kyung Sun Lee for the double concerto movement in P.Q. Phan’s Violin Concerto. Sun Lee earned her degree from Seoul National University, Peabody Conservatory and Julliard, and is currently a professor of violin studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
The Redlands University Orchestra collaborated with Vietnamese composer P.Q. Phan Nov. 3-5 as part of his composer residency and workshop at Redlands. The performance took place on the fifth, and included Phan’s Clarinet Concerto and Violin Concerto, with Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to the Barber of Seville rounding out the rest of the program. The University Orchestra was joined by two soloists as well, Kyung Sun Lee and Kathryn Nevin, for the violin and clarinet concertos respectively.

This is a rapid and joyful work that opens with a dramatic introduction before launching into the fast flowing “Allegro vivace” section.Kathryn Nevin, Redlands artist teacher of clarinet, joins the university orchestra to perform P.Q. Phan’s Clarinet Concerto. Nevin has a well seasoned career of orchestral and chamber work from touring with her chamber wind quintet, Calico Winds, to being a featured soloist with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra.
