The Asian Student Alliance (ASA) held a Holi celebration at 3 p.m. near Beacon Statue on March 21. All were welcome and encouraged to wear white for the colorful event.
Nicknamed the “festival of colors,” Holi is a Hindu celebration of spring, love and new life. The word “Holi” is derived from the character “Holika” whose evil intentions, according to legend, had been thwarted by Hindu gods. This celebration occurs on the day following the last full moon of Phalguna, the twelfth month in the Hindu calendar, which is usually between February and March. This year’s Holi fell on March 14, but ASA postponed their celebration a week due to inclement weather.
ASA is a University of Redlands student organization founded in 2015 that celebrates Asian cultures with several events throughout the year. This club is open to all students, including those without Asian heritage.
Other ASA events include a Lunar New Year celebration, KBBQ and Night Market. They also have bi-weekly meetings from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Hunsaker Multicultural Center that are open to all.
