With the upcoming presidential election taking place Nov. 5, 2024, it has become more important than ever to be an educated voter.
The Johnston Center for Integrative Studies is holding a Johnston National Convention today, Oct. 11, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be hosted in Bekin’s lawn, in front of the Bekin’s dorm housing. This is a new event, hosted by Professor Tim Seiber’s class: Digital Media, Politics Communications. Seiber is a long-time faculty member of the Johnston Center, having worked there since 2010, with a focus in digital media, medical humanities, pop culture, and critical theory. He is now the Johnston Director, and will be DJing the event under the pseudonym PHDJ. During the event, Johnston’s self-run coffee shop, Day Java, will be open. Students will be allowed to enter the Bekin’s lobby and purchase various different types of teas, coffees, and pastries for less than $2.00 a piece. The shop will be open the entirety of the event, with a special deal that will allow a student to receive a free item of choice, if they can provide proof of voter’s registration.
The event was created with the intention to advocate for voting registration, encourage eligible voters to vote in the upcoming presidential election, and to educate students on the candidates and their policies. The event will feature booths that will inform on policies and help students register to vote, information pamphlets on candidates and policies, and the opportunity for students to interact and learn about the upcoming presidential election. Additionally, there will be food, drinks, and electronic music.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about the upcoming election in a safe and immersive environment.
