The University of Redlands women’s volleyball team lost to Occidental College at home in three sets on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
Although the match started out neck and neck, and the game was tied nine-all at one point, Occidental eventually pulled away and won the first set, 25-18.
Occidental also took the second set 25-17. Although the Bulldogs lost the third set, it was by far their best statistically. The Bulldog’s defense was also able to limit the Tigers to a .116 hitting percentage, compared to a .385 in the first set and a .486 in the second. Senior setter Ellie McLeod was able to set up the team’s offense for success; sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Burdick, freshman opposite outside hitter Megan Houston, and freshman middle hitter Sophia Olsson were all able to drum up excitement and get points on the board for Redlands.
Despite the efforts made by the Lady Bulldogs, it was not enough to stop the Tigers from winning the third set 25-18 for a clean sweep victory against Redlands.
The final stats for Tuesday’s game showed Olsson’s hitting percentage to be .429 off of 10 kills and 21 attacks, Burdick with seven kills, and Houston with six. The setter, McLeod recorded 28 assists in the match. On the defensive side, Lux had 17 digs throughout the game, while Burdick finished the night with 15 digs.
The Bulldogs (11-11, 2-10 SCIAC) will go to Caltech on Friday, Oct. 21, for a 7 p.m. match against the Beavers.
