The Lady Bulldogs stepped onto the volleyball court this Tuesday knowing they had a tough task ahead of them. Throughout the season, Claremont Mudd-Scripps (CMS) has carried a 14-0 overall winning streak and has been unbeaten in the six SCIAC games played thus far. Though the Redlands women put up a valiant effort, it was not enough to slow down the Athenas. The second ranked DIII team in the nation beat Redlands in four sets.
From the beginning, it was easy to see what makes the Athenas such an extraordinary team. Minimal mistakes and great passing led CMS to a 25-17 win in the first set. Although the Bulldogs began the second set strong with a 5-4 lead, CMS quickly caught on and were up 15-4 against Redlands. The Bulldogs fought back, but CMS was still able to finish ahead with a final score of 25-13, giving them a 2-0 set lead over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs refused to roll over for the Athenas. Redlands stole the third set, forcing CMS to fight hard for their win. Freshmen Christina Casey and Sofia Olsson each had five kills in the third set, helping the Bulldogs stay in the game until the very end. Down 22-24, Redlands showed true determination and scored four points in a row to take the victory from Claremont.
Unfortunately, the Athenas controlled the fourth and final set, not allowing the Bulldogs to score more than three consecutive points. A service error by Redlands freshman Sammy Tafoya handed CMS a hard-earned victory, putting them up 15-0 for the season.
The Lady Bulldogs also boast a winning record and will put their 10-7 mark to the test against Mills College on Oct. 9th.
